Marcel Schrötter’s journey to the penultimate event of the EURO MOTO season was hectic, but the 33-year-old BMW rider from Team GERT56 by RS Speedbikes is giving it his all to keep his title hopes alive in the Superbike class.
The Öhlins EURO Moto Nürburgring weekend from September 4 to 6 could prove decisive. Defending champion Lukas “Tulo” Tulovic (Ducati) leads the championship in the top class. His lead over runner-up Marcel Schrötter stands at 46.5 points. Theoretically, Tulovic could clinch his second consecutive title as early as this weekend. But a lot can still happen between now and then. It’s not over until it’s over. Schrötter knows this from experience. The 2023 World Championship third-place finisher in the Supersport class is competing in the 24th season of his racing career.
An additional practice session will take place at the Nürburgring today, Thursday. Schrötter, however, had a short night. He arrived at the Ring straight from southern France, where preparations were underway for the “Bol d’Or,” which will take place in two weeks at Le Castellet. The 24-hour race for the “Golden Bowl” is the finale of the World Endurance Championship, in which Schrötter competes with the ERC Endurance Team.
Today, Schrötter hopes to set the stage for a successful finish to his first EURO MOTO Superbike season. “Even though I was a little stressed about the trip, today’s test day comes at just the right time. Lately, we’ve been struggling a bit with speed. However, we gathered a lot of ideas recently in Assen that we can try out during the test sessions.”
For the BMW rider, there's more at stake this weekend than just good results. He's trying to ensure that the Superbike title isn't decided until the season finale.
