One week, three countries, two days of testing, a new team setup—and strong initial lap times at Most: Inigo Iglesias has completed a veritable motorsport marathon over the past few days. The Spaniard, who won the IDM title in the Supersport in 2023 and most recently competed in the World Championship, is now returning with Team Wematik Racing by RT Motorsports—a team created specifically for him—and is making an immediate impact.
A fresh start after several team changes
After switching teams twice in quick succession, his manager, Rob Vennegoor, set out to launch a completely new project where Iglesias could establish a permanent foothold. Preparations have been in full swing since the IDM race weekend in Schleiz—and now the team is ready to go.
Things really kicked into high gear at the start of this week: On Monday, the 22-year-old traveled from Spain to the UK, where he picked up the Triumph Daytona 660 prepared by TT legend Peter Hickman. The first test rides at the challenging Cadwell Park followed as early as Tuesday and Wednesday, giving him two days to get familiar with the new bike. Without much of a break, he headed straight to Most, Czech Republic, on Thursday for the next IDM weekend. “That was an insane week. It’s unbelievable what Rob has accomplished in the last few weeks—and what we’ve managed to pull off together in the last few days,” said Iglesias, clearly impressed.
Strong pace despite a short adjustment period
And his debut has been impressive: In the very first free practice session on Friday morning, Iglesias finished third—and moved up to second place in the second session that afternoon. “I’m happy with how things have gone so far. But I don’t feel 100 percent comfortable on the Triumph yet—so there’s definitely room for improvement,” explains Iglesias, who still needs to get used to the new bike.
With this starting grid, the first qualifying session will take place on Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m., followed by Q2 at 11:45 a.m. In the afternoon, the first IDM Sportbike race will start at 4:15 p.m. – live via stream at www.idm.de/live.
