There was no getting past Ruben Bijman (Freudenberg KTM-Paligo Racing) in the IDM Supersport on Friday. Although the Dutch rider had to sit out the first free practice session in the morning due to rain, he confidently left his rivals in the dust in both the second practice session and the first qualifying session in the evening with a fastest lap time of 1:51.956 minutes. The KTM rider had to grit his teeth and push through the pain, however. Just a few days ago, Bijman had stitches put in his hip and elbow following a crash at last weekend’s World Championship round in Portimao. But that didn’t dampen his performance. “I don’t feel 100 percent fit, but I feel good enough to race this weekend on my home track,” said the 20-year-old from Lopik, Netherlands. He’ll have the chance to prove whether he can maintain his form on Saturday at 11:10 a.m., when the second qualifying session gets underway.
After two dismal practice sessions, in which Philipp Tonn (Freudenberg KTM-Paligo Racing) was unable to complete more than two laps due to technical issues, the Saxon pulled off a real coup on his final practice lap. With a time of 1:52.279, he overtook his teammate Oliver Svendsen and catapulted himself into second place. “I really hope that the bike runs flawlessly, at least in qualifying,” he said before his final attempt. In the evening, he finally had that little bit of luck on his side.
Behind the KTM trio, the two Dutch riders Dylan Czarkowski (Racing DC) and Senna van den Hooven (Molenaar Racing) took fourth and fifth place. Two Swiss riders, Fabio Sarasino (Freudenberg KTM-Paligo Racing) and Niklas Böhlen (Blau Power Bikes), finished in sixth and seventh place.
Following the second qualifying session on Saturday morning, the first race will start later that same day at 3:25 p.m. All races can be watched for free at www.idm.de/live.
