IDM SBK: Warum Marc Moser sich 2023 so schwer tut

All out on the attack, a spot in the top 5 or at least the top 10—that’s the Marc Moser we know. But there’s no sign of that whatsoever this season. The 29-year-old blames himself for the situation.

Moser’s victory lap in the IDM Superbike at Oschersleben two years ago remains etched in memory. In the wet conditions, he was one of the few riders to opt for slicks, hoping the rain would stop. He was proven right. Moser’s moment came in the second half of the race, when he overtook the field and secured victory in impressive fashion on his Yamaha YZF-R1M. That was Moser’s big day. But the Bonovo team ended its involvement in the IDM Superbike series after the season, and Moser lost his ride. He found a new role in the World Endurance Championship and signed with Team ERC Ducati.

The IDM Superbike remained his passion, however, and Moser was delighted to be able to return in 2023 and find a new home with Team Motoforce Racing alongside teammate Sandro Wagner. This makes his current situation all the more difficult. Moser has scored just six points in the six races held so far. “I’m falling short of expectations, especially my own,” admits Moser, who now rides a BMW M 1000 RR. However, he has also identified where the problem lies. “The BMW handles completely differently from the Ducati. I’m used to braking all the way into the apex of the corner. The BMW wants to be taken around the corner with the throttle. You need to find the slowest point before the apex and then accelerate out. I haven’t been able to do that yet. So far, I haven’t managed to get the bike to do what I want it to. But the team and the environment are a good fit,” Moser admits.

But this die-hard racer, who works as a management consultant in Frankfurt am Main, is working on it. Above all, he says, “I love the Schleizer Dreieck.” The races at the natural-terrain track are next on the calendar and will take place from July 21 to 23, 2023. And once Moser gets the hang of it, we can expect great things from him.
