IDM SBK: Tiefschlag von Fetz folgt Steilkurve nach oben

Everything is running smoothly again for Marco Fetz. The superbike rider, who was sidelined for a long time due to injury, is already competing in two series this year. Text: Anke Wieczorek; photos: Dino Eisele

At the season opener at the Sachsenring three weeks ago, Marco Fetz competed in his first sprint race in the IDM Superbike since Assen 2021. Now the next round in Oschersleben is coming up, and a spot in the FIM Endurance World Championship has also been booked.

The 23-year-old Bavarian from Kleinbreitenbronn has known for a week. He will also compete in the 24-lap race at Spa in two weeks with the French team Energie Endurance 91, with whom he already competed at Le Mans. At least there is a chance. The fastest three of the four drivers from training are allowed to take part in the race.

"I think it's cool. Two endurance races over 24 hours in a row. When you get an offer like that, you shouldn't turn it down. And every kilometer on the motorcycle brings me further forward, so it doesn't matter that I'm riding a Kawasaki in the World Endurance Championship. The motorcycles are built completely differently to the IDM machines anyway, the difference is enormous, starting with the electronics alone," says Fetz, who rides a BMW S 1000 RR in the IDM.

After his serious accident in Assen two years ago, in which he suffered a complicated fracture of his right thigh, there were times when he wanted to give up everything. Although his thigh was operated on after the crash, the surgery was unsuccessful. Fetz went through a low point, wondering whether he would ever be able to race again or even cope with everyday life normally. A year later, he underwent another operation. This time, it was successful, and now Fetz has returned to the IDM Superbike with the MF Racing powered by Jung team. Although Fetz was not entirely satisfied with his three points in the premier class at the start of the season, "it's something to build on."
