With four runner-up titles on two different brands over the past seven years, Florian Alt is undoubtedly one of the most successful IDM riders in the paddock. But the Gummersbach native isn’t just one of the top riders in the IDM. On the international stage, he proved his riding skills as early as 2012 with the title in the Red Bull Rookies Cup, followed in 2017 by the World Cup in the Superstock class of the Endurance World Championship. In the 2023 season, after three successful years with Wilbers BMW, Florian will join Jens Holzhauer’s HRP Team, where he will ride the current Honda CBR 1000 RR-R, which has also been his race bike in the EWC with the Honda Viltaïs Racing Team since this year.
In the fourth episode of the IDM podcast *Slicks and Sunglasses*, Florian Alt talks about what matters most to him when switching to a new motorcycle, how his first few days of testing with the 2023 Holzhauer Honda went, and what still needs to be done before the season kicks off in mid-May at the Sachsenring.
While the IDM season is still in its preparatory phase, the EWC has already kicked off the 2023 racing year with the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans. With temperatures at times resembling winter and well over a hundred crashes, the traditional French race was literally a chaotic affair. The perfect opportunity to ask Florian why anyone would subject themselves to the rigors of a motorcycle endurance race, how sprint races differ from endurance racing, and how it’s possible to achieve the same lap times at night as under perfect conditions during the day.
