For racers to give their all on the weekend, they need not only plenty of training, physical fitness, and complete concentration, but also a perfectly prepared motorcycle and an optimal environment. While participants in amateur racing are responsible for everything themselves, riders in the various world championships—and, of course, in the IDM—can rely on a professional team structure. Team members typically not only handle the organization and technical aspects but also ensure the physical well-being of their riders through catering and, in some cases, even their own physical therapists. Furthermore, it is often the teams themselves that actively seek out young talent in order to nurture it from an early stage.
In Episode drei des IDM Podcasts „Slicks and Sunglasses“ gewährt mit Jochen Kiefer vom Kiefer Racing Team einer der erfahrensten Team-Chefs Einblicke in seine Arbeit. Der 54-jährige geht mit seinem Team in der Saison 2023 sowohl in der IDM Supersport 300 als auch in der Supersport-Klasse an den Start. Während mit Leon Orgis und Yves Stadelmann zwei schon erfahrenere Fahrer die Supersport Motorräder pilotieren werden und der amtierende SSP-300-Meister Marvin Siebdrath auf Yamaha R3 und zu Kiefer wechselt, betreut Jochen Kiefer im Rahmen des Yamaha bLU cRU Academy Nachwuchsförderprogramms neben dem 15-jährigen Albert Prasse auch den erst 13-jährigen Mitja Borgelt in der 300er-Klasse. Im Podcast beschreibt er seine Herangehensweise bei der Wahl neuer Fahrer, erzählt von den Besonderheiten bei der Arbeit mit jungen Talenten und erklärt, inwieweit sich seine Arbeit in der IDM von der in der Moto3- und Moto2-Weltmeisterschaft unterscheidet.
