After a one-year hiatus from the IDM, Marc Moser is returning to the Superbike class of the International German Motorcycle Championship. He’ll be teaming up with Sandro Wagner, who is embarking on his second year in the premier class and launching his own team. Team name? Still to be determined. Manufacturer? BMW.

A year without the IDM didn’t really sit well with Marc Moser. After the official Yamaha team—where he was a regular rider—withdrew, he hadn’t been able to find a spot for 2022 and had moved to the FIM Endurance World Championship. Now, a turnaround. “Of course, the chance to race in the IDM again immediately appealed to me,” says Moser. “I’d been looking around the whole time to see where I could fit in, but the coveted spots on the big teams were already taken, or I was simply too late.” “Originally, I’d thought I’d be able to join the IDM with Ducati, but that didn’t work out, so I started looking elsewhere.”

Moser had established himself as a regular in the top ten of the IDM, with occasional podium finishes. His goal for this year: “Top 5 or even top 3. First, I need to see how things go with the BMW. I’m quite familiar with the M 1000 RR we’ll be using—I’ve ridden it in the Endurance World Championship—but in endurance mode, it’s a far cry from a race bike on a sprint track. But I’m hopeful I’ll be able to get the hang of it quickly.” Testing will take place in Misano over Easter and in Mugello the following week.

Sandro Wagner finished his debut year in the IDM Superbike series in 14th place overall and earned 44 championship points. Sixteen of those points alone came from his stellar performance at Assen. Wagner entered Germany’s top motorcycle class as the 2021 Pro Superstock runner-up and is eager to learn. He wants to keep moving up the ranks. With Marc Moser, he finally has a teammate from whom he can learn. And it certainly doesn’t hurt that the technical side of things on the track is in the hands of die-hard BMW enthusiast Thomas Reiterberger, the father of the four-time IDM Superbike champion.
