IDM SSP: Van Straalen Wins, van der Voort Finishes Last

It’s rare to see just one Dutch rider on the TT Circuit Assen. Glenn van Straaalen and Melvin van der Voort both made it onto the podium. Text: Anke Wieczorek, Photo: Rowena Hinzmann

Glenn van Straalen also won the second IDM Supersport race, but he had to overcome a few obstacles first.

When 33 riders are on the track and all trying to enter the first corner, things can get very tight. Melvin van der Voort (SWPN, Yamaha) handled the situation well, Andreas Kofler (Kawasaki Schnock Team Motorex) had already lived up to his nickname “Rocket Andy” right at the start, while Glenn van Straalen (EAB Racing) was pushed wide and lost several positions.

Yves Stadelmann, the Kiefer Racing Team’s protégé, shot up from eighth to third place, bringing a delighted smile to team boss Jochen Kiefer’s face. His driver hadn’t finished the first race. The fact that he dropped back to tenth place by the end of the second race is another story.

Van Straalen, who had fallen back, didn't waste any time and was already back in second place behind van der Voort by the second lap. By the eleventh of 13 laps, he’d had enough of watching his 17-year-old compatriot from the Netherlands from behind. Van Straalen attacked, passed the young driver, and the latter had a lot to learn from the World Championship hero—and pocketed 25 points, since as a guest rider, van Straalen didn’t receive a single one.

Luca de Vleeschauwer (Kawasaki Weber-Motos Racing) ensured that, behind the winner, the podium wasn't entirely Dutch again, as it had been in the first race.

Behind them, Victor Steeman, Andy Kofler, and Jan-Ole Jähnig (M32 Racing) closed the gap as the race progressed. For Max Enderlein (M32 Racing), the weekend didn’t end as brilliantly as usual, but the Saxon knows that forcing the issue isn’t the right way to get things done when things aren’t going well. His lead in the overall standings is still very respectable—66 points.
