IDM: Race starts at the Schleizer Dreieck in front of a live audience

The highlight of the season for the International German Motorcycle Championship (IDM) at the Schleizer Dreieck has been confirmed: During the IDM weekend from July 23 to 25, spectators will be allowed back for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, they can make the pilgrimage to the legendary racetrack once again. Wide straights, tight corners, a temporary pit lane, die-hard fans, and raw, unbridled excitement make the races at Germany’s only natural racetrack a special experience time and time again.

“We’ve received the green light from Schleiz to hold the event as planned. The infection rates have dropped enough that no fan will have to stay home,” says series manager Normann Broy.
In Thuringia’s “Green Living Room,” racing is experienced like almost nowhere else in Germany. When the IDM took place in Schleiz two years ago—the last time it was held there until now—nearly 30,000 spectators watched the races in person. “For our riders, it’s a unique atmosphere,” says Broy, adding: “In Schleiz, everything is a little different, a little nostalgic, a little crazy. But that’s part of the appeal. And we hope it will be that way again in 2021.”

The IDM classes competing will be Superbike 1000, Supersport 600, Supersport 300, and Sidecar. In the premier class, IDM Superbike 1000, local hero Julian Puffe—who hails from Schleiz—is in sixth place in the overall standings and hopes to make a step forward on his home track. In the junior class, the IDM Supersport 300, Schleiz native Micky Winkler aims to continue his upward trend. The program will be rounded out by the final rounds of the Pro Superstock Cup, the Twin Cup, and the Yamaha bLU cRU Cup.
