An unusual IDM season with just four events is coming to an end. How are you doing?
The IDM season has been the best possible advertisement for motorcycle racing in Germany. The races in all series were thrilling and extremely entertaining. The IDM stands for top-tier motorcycle racing: strong riders, plenty of battles for position, and surprising results. That’s sure to delight any motorsports fan. On top of that, we were able to welcome spectators back to Hockenheim for the first time. For me, it was an all-around successful season, despite the difficult conditions. Another major success was the free livestream we were able to offer for all four events.
Was bleibt von dieser Saison?
Natürlich haben Jonas Folger und sein Team Bonovo Action by MGM Racing der IDM-Königsklasse den Stempel aufgedrückt. Aber in seinem Windschatten haben sich viele Positionskämpfe abgespielt, die sicher nicht nur mich begeistert haben. Ich denke da zum Beispiel an die Läufe auf dem Sachsenring. Der erfolgreiche Start des Northern Talent Cup mit der beeindruckenden Leistung von Freddie Heinrich ist ein weiterer Meilenstein für die von uns veranstaltete Serie. Zusammen mit der IDM Supersport 300, die sich wirklich grandios entwickelt, haben wir jetzt die Basis für den Motorradnachwuchs, die wir dringend brauchen. Eine Leistungsdichte wie in unserer Nachwuchsklasse ist für eine nationale Serie dieser Klasse weltweit wahrscheinlich einmalig.
Wann sehen wir IDM-Fahrer in einer WM?
Das hängt von vielen Faktoren ab. Fakt ist, dass die Serien deutsche Fahrer wollen. Aber für die IDM selbst zeichnet sich eine schöne Entwicklung ab. Immer mehr Nachwuchsfahrer entscheiden sich für die 600er-Klasse als nächste Stufe auf ihrer Karriereleiter. Luca Grünwald war da ein Trendsetter, als er im vergangenen Jahr aus der Supersport 300-Weltmeisterschaft in die IDM Supersport 600 gewechselt ist. Mit Victor Steeman, Dion Otten oder Angelo Licciardi haben beispielsweise weitere Fahrer diesen Weg eingeschlagen. Rick Dunnik oder Melvin van der Voort sind beispielweise die nächsten Kandidaten. Auch Teams öffnen sich für diese nächste Stufe. RT Motorsports by SKM-Kawasaki bereichert zum Beispiel die IDM Supersport 600 mit einem Einsatz neben ihrem Engagement in der 300er. Diese wachsende Struktur setzt ein starkes Zeichen für die IDM.
Jetzt machst Du erstmal Urlaub…
… dazu bleibt kaum Zeit. Wir stecken ja schon mitten in den Planungen für die nächste Saison. Entscheidend ist, dass unsere Partner der IDM treu bleiben und wir weitere hinzugewinnen können. Die IDM ist unter der Regie der Motor Presse Stuttgart wieder zu einer sehr guten und spannenden Plattform gewachsen, die Partner in vielfältiger Form für sich nutzen können. Und wir wollen die Attraktivität der IDM noch weiter steigern.
How do you plan to achieve that?
The riders play a crucial role. They are the heroes of the IDM. We’re very proud that even an exceptional rider like Jonas Folger feels at home in the IDM. We offer the best platform for motorcycle racers from Germany and neighboring countries. Top-tier local riders like Florian Alt, for example, belong in the IDM, in my opinion. The World Endurance Championship simply doesn’t get the same attention here as it does in France or Japan, for example. Of course, we need more top teams. The fact that GERT 56 is moving from the World Endurance Championship to the IDM after their Le Mans victory in the Superstock class—and that Toni Finsterbusch is returning with them—is a very positive sign to me.
What are your biggest hopes for the upcoming season?
You don’t open your presents until Christmas, after all. On my wish list, of course, are full starting grids—at least as many as this year—and thrilling races, which are the best advertisement for motorcycle racing in Germany. We also want to establish the IDM as a professional platform for young motorcycle racers in Northern and Central Europe. German riders can only take the next step if they can learn and hold their own in a competitive environment. An additional manufacturer getting involved in the IDM would be another great gift with a huge bow on top. But I’d still be happy to accept that as an Easter surprise.
