Sidecars are as much a part of the IDM as fire is to a flame. While the World Championship has allowed only 600cc engines since 2017, the IDM continues to rely on 1000cc engines. The German Sidecar Racing Association (IGG), which advocates for the IDM, insists on maintaining the class. It refuses to go along with the reduction in displacement to 600 cc, arguing that the costs of retrofitting are disproportionate to the benefits. The FIM justified the power reduction by citing a reduced risk of accidents.
The 600cc class has also made its mark in the IDM and become a top contender. A year ago, eight-time world champion Tim Reeves also discovered the IDM circuit. He competed in every race and clinched the title early. In 2020, the Briton will be a repeat participant in the IDM, as will Pekka Päivärinta from Finland, Bennie Streuer from the Netherlands, and Germany’s Josef “Sepp” Sattler with start number “35.” The teams, which also compete in the World Championship, view the IDM as the ideal preparation.
The 600cc sidecars and the 1000cc duos will compete in the same field but with separate standings.
