The Future Begins Now: The New Sportbike Class Makes Its Debut in the 2025 International German Motorcycle Championship (IDM)
The new sportbike class will make its debut in the International German Motorcycle Championship (IDM) in 2025—one year before officially becoming part of the World Superbike Championship (WorldSBK). This gives young talents aged 15 and older in Central Europe a unique opportunity to prepare early for the next step in their careers and gain a crucial competitive advantage as they enter the world championship.
The season opener will take place on May 9 at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben. A total of seven race weekends, each featuring two scoring heats, are on the schedule. Iconic tracks such as the Schleizer Dreieck, the World Championship circuits at Most and Assen, the GP track at the Nürburgring, and the legendary Hockenheimring provide the perfect setting. The new class replaces the Supersport 300 as the junior category, in line with manufacturers’ requests, as they have adapted their model lineups in recent years to meet the growing interest in more powerful machines within the A2 license category.
A wide selection of competitive bikes will be available, including the Aprilia RS660, Kawasaki Ninja 650, Triumph Daytona 660, and Yamaha YZF-R7. Thanks to standardized electronics, the performance of the various motorcycles will be adjusted to around 95 hp. All details can be found in the 2025 Technical & Sporting Regulations.
Another advantage: Costs remain manageable in the new class. A race-ready Triumph, including the standardized electronics, costs approximately €21,000 net, while the entry fee per event is just €750 net.
In addition to this unique opportunity, the IDM also provides significant media exposure through its wide-reaching livestream, ensuring vital visibility for participating riders, teams, and sponsors. All sportbike class races will be fully covered as part of the IDM live broadcast.
Following its debut in the British Superbike Championship (BSB) in 2024, where it has now firmly established itself, the sportbike class will also make its debut in the Italian CIV championship alongside the IDM in 2025.

IDM Sportbike: A Pioneer in Europe + A Playground for the Future
On May 9, the MotorsportArena Oschersleben will host the season opener for the new sportbike class in the International German Motorcycle Championship (IDM). This inaugural year is special, and the best part is: never before have the young up-and-comers been better prepared for the next step in their careers. The FIM doesn’t plan to introduce this format until 2026 as part of the World Superbike events. In the IDM, it’s set to begin as early as 2025, making the class highly intriguing even beyond Germany’s borders for that reason alone. No one can take that head start away.
Seven rounds, each featuring two races, have been scheduled. The venues are Oschersleben, Schleiz, Most, Assen, the Nürburgring, and Hockenheim. The new sportbike class replaces the previous junior class, the “ Supersport 300.” Interest in the smaller class has recently been limited among riders, teams, and manufacturers alike. For manufacturers in particular, the more powerful models on the market are significantly more relevant. In addition, the pool of potentially eligible motorcycles—including the Yamaha YZF-R7, Kawasaki Ninja 650, Triumph Daytona 660, and Aprilia RS660—is much larger.
The costs are straightforward. The entry fee is 750 euros net per event. For example, a race-ready Triumph with electronics costs 21,000.00 euros net. The only additional cost is the gear ratio. The standardized electronics ensure that the various engine configurations are matched to a power level of approximately 95 PS. Riders must be at least 15 years old to compete in the class.
All IDM Sportbike races will, of course, also be part of the IDM live coverage and broadcast in their entirety. At the same time, the Italian CIV Championship will take the plunge and host a Sportbike season for the first time. The class has already been introduced in the British BSB Championship.
