The second race in the IDM Supersport 300 ended with a one-two finish for Phillip Tonn. Dutch rider Dylan Czarkowski claimed third place despite a penalty.

Phillip Tonn (Freudenberg KTM-Paligo Racing) clearly left his mark on the Supersport 300 races of the International German Motorcycle Championship (IDM) in Assen this weekend. On Saturday, the Saxon celebrated his first win of the season; on Sunday, he secured a one-two finish. In the second race, strategy was key to his success. Since he couldn’t pull away from his rivals, he devised a new plan right in the middle of the race. To make it work, he had to keep his rivals busy, he explained after the podium ceremony. The showdown finally came on the last lap. “I knew I could attack effectively on the back straight once I broke out of the slipstream. That’s why I let myself fall back slightly on the penultimate lap, so I could strike right there and come out of the final chicane with more momentum to cross the finish line,” Tonn described the decisive maneuver that led to his double victory. With the full points haul, Tonn climbs three spots in the championship standings and leaves the Netherlands in third place overall.

Despite high expectations, Ruben Bijman (Freudenberg KTM-Paligo Racing) was unable to secure a victory on his home track in the second race either. In both races, he put in an impressively strong performance despite his injuries and engaged in thrilling battles with Philipp Tonn, Oliver Svendsen (Freudenberg KTM-Paligo Racing), and Dylan Czarkowski (DC Racing) at the front of the pack. In the end, however, he had to settle for second place.

Dylan Czarkowski was finally rewarded for his hard work. As the only non-KTM rider able to keep up with the Freudenberg armada, the Dutchman secured third place despite a one-second time penalty. He received this penalty for cutting the corner in the final chicane shortly before the finish line. “That was an extremely tough race. I had the pace to keep up with the leaders, and I kept telling myself in the final laps not to make any mistakes. But just before the finish, there was no more room, and I had to swerve onto the run-off area,” Czarkowski explained afterward. After having been hot on the heels of the KTM trio in Schleiz and putting pressure on them—only to crash in the second race due to an oil spill—he was finally able to celebrate his performance with a spot on the podium at his home track.

However, the evasive maneuver caused Oliver Svendsen to fall behind. The championship leader crossed the finish line right behind Czarkowski and finished in fourth place. Since he drove off the track on the final lap and was also given a one-second penalty by race officials, the final result remained unchanged.

Senna van den Hoven (Molenaar Racing) secured fifth place after prevailing in a constant battle with Fabio Sarasino (Freudenberg KTM-Paligo Racing). Swedish guest rider Markus Storm (Storm Racing) finished seventh, followed by Niklas Böhlen (Blau Power Bikes), Emil Täglund (Tägtlund Motorsport), and Ty Henriksen (Henriksen Racing), who rounded out the top 10. Another Swedish guest rider, Hugo Viklund (Belin Racing), finished in eleventh place.
