IDM SSP: A Starting Grid Full of Suspense

It’s happened again. Andreas Kofler (Yamalube Kofler) will once again start from pole position at the International German Motorcycle Championship (IDM) in Most. Although Marcel Brenner (VIAMO Racing by MTM) from Switzerland seemed to be trying to hold him back, he ultimately fell short by 0.423 seconds. Several potential favorites for victory in the IDM Supersport class Supersport further back. That means: The race is guaranteed to be thrilling.

Andreas Kofler had pushed the bike to its limits and said, “We’ve managed to shave off another six-tenths of a second and are in a good position.” In the first qualifying session, the Austrian was the only rider in Supersport to shine with 1:35-minute lap times. In the second session, Marcel Brenner also joined the fray. He will line up alongside Kofler on the front row at 4:30 p.m.—the first race takes place today. No matter how it turns out, Brenner won’t be scoring any points. He is a guest rider and therefore not eligible for the standings. However, the 24-year-old from the canton of Bern is no unknown quantity. He already raced in the IDM Supersport in 2021 before trying his hand at the World Championship.

It was already clear yesterday during free practice that Daniel Blin would be among the front-runners and would be starting third on the front row today. The Polish rider from the AF-Racing Team is fourth overall in the IDM standings and has already finished on the podium twice on his Ducati Panigale V2.

Lennox Lehmann of Dresden slipped from second to fifth place in the second qualifying session. Oschersleben double winner Luca de Vleeschauwer (MotoLife, Triumph) is only on the third row of the grid. For Dirk Geiger (MCA Racing, Honda), who had won a trophy at Oschersleben, it was even a drop back to the fourth row of the grid. The 21-year-old optimist was puzzled: “That was all I could do. I squeezed every last bit out of the Honda, but that was just it.” With the exception of Marvin Siebdrath (Yamaha by M32), more or less the entire field improved in the second qualifying session. The Wildenfels native shrugged: “Clutch failure. The thing was grinding the whole time.”
