His path is set to lead to the Motorcycle World Championship, even though Melvin van der Voort fell five points short of his goal of winning the Supersport IDM Supersport title. The 18-year-old Dutch rider will kick things off with a World Championship wildcard from October 27 to 29 in Jerez, Spain.

After six IDM victories this year, Team SWPN applied for and was granted a wild card for its rider Melvin van der Voort to compete in the Supersport in Spain at the end of October. For van der Voort, this will mark his debut in the class at the “Circuito de Jerez – Ángel Nieto.” The Yamaha rider won’t be arriving unprepared. He’ll be competing in a round of the Spanish Championship at that same track as early as this coming weekend (October 12–15).

“We wanted to give Melvin the opportunity to compete at the World Cup level,” says SWPN team manager Frank Brouwer. “He has developed into an outstanding rider both on and off the track in recent years. Together with our partner Yamaha Motor Europe, Benelux branch, we managed to secure a wildcard.” The long-haired IDM runner-up himself is thrilled by the chance to compete on the big stage: “I’m really excited to be able to show what I can do at the highest level in the world.”
