Es waren 14 Punkte, die Twan Smits (Team Apreco) und Melvin van der Voort (Team SWPN) vor dem finalen Lauf in der Gesamtwertung trennten. Dass der IDM Supersport-Titel an einen der beiden Fahrer aus der Niederlande geht, war klar, aber nicht an wen. Am Ende stand Smits mit der Yamaha unter der Konfetti-Kanone.
Thomas Gradinger (Eder Racing) got off to the best start. Twan Smits then took the lead. By the fourth lap, Melvin van der Voort had pulled out in front, breaking away from the chasing pack. Smits was in third place when he was overtaken by Martin Vugrinec (//ART DREIER RACING TEAM). The Croatian isn’t just fast—he’s also quite aggressive. But Smits couldn’t shake him off. Eventually, he let him pass. But it wasn’t quite that simple. If van der Voort won, Smits would have to finish at least fourth to have a shot at the championship trophy, and that’s exactly where the Yamaha rider was now. But Andreas Kofler (M32 Racing) was now closing in from behind, and the Austrian didn’t care at all which of the Dutchmen would become champion or who he would pass next. Smits’s points lead seemed to be melting away. What would have been a golden opportunity for Melvin van der Voort at the front was out of the question for his opponent. Smits decided on the only right solution: he overtook Vugrinec and moved back into third place. On the very last lap, Smits even set the fastest lap of the race, and after 15 laps of 3.692 kilometers each, he was crowned the new IDM champion.
Van der Voort hatte sich an der Spitze des Feldes die Seele aus dem Leib gefahren, den fünften Saisonsieg geholt und damit soviel wie kein anderer, doch zum Titel hat es nicht gereicht. Fünf Punkte haben gefehlt. Gradinger zeigte auf dem zweiten Platz noch einmal alles, was in ihm steckt. Gastfahrer Kevin Wahr (Triumph emsland.de) war noch schneller als im ersten Rennen und Max Enderlein (M32 Racing) überlegt jetzt, ob er sein Team im kommenden Jahr auf Ducati fahren lässt, falls die Marke in die IDM einsteigt. Für Christoph Beinlich war das Hockenheim-Finale ein versöhnlicher Abschluss einer bitter-süßen Saison: in beiden Rennen gepunktet und Achter in der Gesamtwertung 2023. Till Belczykowski (LJ Racing ADAC Pfalz e.V.) Team landete mit seiner MV Agusta im Abseits.
