Inigo Iglesias wins the second race in the IDM " Supersport " 300 class in a photo finish against Dirk Geiger. With this victory, the Spaniard has clinched the German IDM championship in the junior class ahead of schedule.
The second race of the IDM Supersport 300 was packed with thrills and intense battles. The man of the day was ultimately Inigo Iglesias (Füsport – RT Motorsports by SKM – Kawasaki), who not only held his own against nine different rivals in the leading group but also kept his cool right up to the final turn. “It was a really tough race today,” Iglesias said afterward, revealing that he had made it his firm goal this weekend to clinch the championship. To do so, he had to go all out in the second race. “I was already riding at the absolute limit, but I just couldn’t pull away. So I prepared for the final turn and took a huge risk,” Iglesias continued. The pass on the leading Dirk Geiger ended in a photo finish, with the Kawasaki rider crossing the finish line first by a razor-thin margin of just 0.030 seconds. With a total of 216 points in the overall standings, he secured an unassailable lead and clinched the title early. For Team Füsport – RT Motorsports by SKM – Kawasaki, which is withdrawing from the IDM at the end of the season, this marks its second consecutive championship title.
Dirk Geiger (Freudenberg KTM-Paligo Racing) thus narrowly missed his second victory of the weekend and took a hard look at himself after the race. “I didn’t expect Inigo to pass me on the start-finish straight,” admitted the KTM rider, who had already counted on the win, adding: “That just goes to show once again that it’s not over until the very last centimeter has been raced.” The race at Assen marked the Mannheim native’s final IDM race of the year. He will not be competing in the season finale at Hockenheim, as he will instead be participating in the World Championship races in Aragon, Spain.
Although Ruben Bijman (Team Apreco) crossed the finish line in third place on his home track, he immediately had to give up his podium spot because he went off the track on the final lap. As a result, he was demoted one position, which meant that guest rider Kevin Sabatucci (Füsport – RT Motorsports by SKM – Kawasaki) took third place. The previous day’s winner, Loris Veneman (Veneman Racesupport), was once again in the mix at the front in the second race and secured fifth place, ahead of Thom Molenaar in sixth. The Dutch rider from Team Molenaar Racing put in a strong performance this weekend and celebrated his best results of the season with seventh and fourth-place finishes.
