IDM SSP 300: Iglesias Makes a Perfect IDM Debut with a Win

Following an exciting race yesterday, in which newcomer Dustin Schneider (Freudenberg KTM-PALIGO Racing) pulled off a surprise victory, the IDM Supersport headed into its second race on Sunday afternoon. The winner was Spaniard Inigo Iglesias (Füsport – RT Motorsports by SKM – Kawasaki), who had the most momentum going into the final corner and was the first to cross the finish line at the Sachsenring. “That was a strong race with a very high level of competition. I’m glad that, after missing the podium yesterday, I was at least able to win today,” said Iglesias at the podium ceremony. After receiving a double long-lap penalty for a false start in Saturday’s first race, the 21-year-old successfully managed to limit the damage.

Multiple IDM winner and World Championship rider Lennox Lehmann (Freudenberg KTM-PALIGO Racing) finished the race in second place. For a long time, he held back within the leading group, preferring to watch his rivals rather than get involved. On the final lap, the Dresden native finally launched his attack and moved up to the front alongside Inigo Iglesias. “However, I braked too early into the penultimate corner after the downhill section, so Inigo immediately seized his chance,” Lehmann said of his final lap. Nevertheless, the 17-year-old earned 20 crucial points for the championship and his team with his tactical race.

Dirk Geiger (Freudenberg KTM-PALIGO Racing) was in fine form and finished third. The Mannheim native got off to a good start and immediately settled in right behind Inigo Iglesias at the front. Although he led the pack at various points during the race, he was ultimately unable to break away. “I’m currently having a hard time positioning myself in the final laps,” Geiger explained after the race.

Fourth place went to Dutch rider Ruben Bijman (Apreco), who was the only Yamaha in the leading group as early as the first race and ultimately finished fifth. World Championship leader Petr Svoboda (Füsport – RT Motorsports by SKM – Kawasaki) crossed the finish line in fifth place, though he frequently traded the lead with Iglesias and Geiger during the race. Unlike the previous day, when Dustin Schneider emerged as the winner, the Vogtland native could only manage a sixth-place finish on Sunday. For teammate Walid Khan (Freudenberg KTM-PALIGO Racing), the race ended unexpectedly at the start of the final lap because he braked too late into the first corner.

In the chasing pack, Phillip Tonn held on to eighth place ahead of Mate Szamado (Kawasaki Hungary Racing Team), followed by IDM rookie Kas Beekmanns (Apreco) and Ferre Fleerackers. Defending champion Marvin Siebdrath (Yamaha bLU cRU IDM by Kiefer Racing) finished eleventh.
