What’s written on the co-driver’s black sidecar is also inside: Marcel Fries, the 2021 world champion alongside Markus Schlosser. What’s he doing on German rider Markus Schwegler’s LCR-Yamaha sidecar? “I’m filling in for Ondrej Kopecky,” says the Swiss rider happily. Kopecky can’t compete in the first joint World Championship/IDM race at the Sachsenring because his children are sick. His wife Marta, who is also an active passenger, is taking part in an event in the Czech Republic. This time, the decision on who would stay home with the children fell to the husband.

Even though Schwegler has a prominent passenger with him at the Sachsenring, he didn’t get very far in the first free practice session. A few turns and a few sector times, and then the fuel supply cut out. Eight-time world champion Tim Reeves fared even worse. He came to a stop right at the start due to a faulty throttle response.
