Thomas Gradinger, last year’s title favorite who was plagued by injuries, is in top form. The 26-year-old Austrian has been preparing for the new season in Spain, at the Sachsenring, and in Oschersleben. He’s off to a strong start, at least judging by today’s free practice session at the season opener at the Sachsenring.
“We want Supersport champions in the IDM Supersport class—that’s why we’re here,” says team boss Thomas Eder, leaving no room for doubt, especially since Yamaha rider Gradinger has fully recovered. He also explains: “We did our homework over the winter.” As a precaution, Gradinger has also submitted four applications for wild-card entries in the Supersport: for Imola, Most, Magny-Cours, and Portimão. A maximum of three starts is allowed.
It’s not just the driver who has to stick to the rules—Eder does too: no alcohol until the Hockenheim finale in September. Five months ago, he bet 100 liters of beer and a suckling pig, which will be his if he holds out.
