Forget roast lamb and rabbit goulash: a peek into our race car drivers’ kitchens reveals a very different picture. Text: Anke Wieczorek; Photo: Pixabay

Racers are usually a group that takes their diet very seriously. But what happens when the holidays roll around? We took a look to see if there are any exceptions to the rule and what our drivers will be eating this Easter. The results were surprising.

Florian Alt (SBK): “When my girlfriend and I are home together, we have a little ritual where we eat homemade protein pancakes. After a good night’s sleep, they make me happy on Sunday mornings.”

Toni Finsterbusch (SBK): “Asparagus with schnitzel and gravy, courtesy of Mom. After that, I’ll probably go for a little road bike ride with Jan-Ole Jähnig—the weather in Saxony is supposed to be nice.”

Andreas Kofler (SSP): “We have Leberkäse for Easter, just like in the old days at Grandma’s house. But I have to be a little careful right now. Since I’m taking my final exams, I hardly have time to train like I usually do. Well, and chocolate bunnies last a long time with me. I might take a bite here and there for the feel-good hormones or something like that.”

Yves Stadelmann (SSP): “I don’t really handle the cooking at home. But I generally eat a lot of potatoes. We have meat, too. We might have a little extra on special days like Easter. It’s not the right time for that before the season starts, but I know when it’s over and can cut back. On holidays, we have hard-boiled eggs, a homemade yeast plait, and salmon and asparagus sandwiches.”

Thomas Gradinger (SSP): “Oh, it looks like calamari over here, since I’m in Rijeka for training. In any case, there’s seafood here, and that’s what I’ll be eating for Easter. Maybe I’ll go for a bike ride on Sunday. I’ll be riding my motorcycle on Monday and Tuesday.”

Julius Caesar Rörig (SSP): “You’ve asked the right person. I don’t eat meat—I’m strictly vegetarian. I’ve been doing this for a good year and a half now. Although I really enjoy cooking for myself, I have to rely on others to prepare my legumes for me at the moment. I had surgery on my right wrist due to overuse and can’t do much.”

Marvin Siebdrath (SSP 300):
“On Monday, Grandma’s making Sauerbraten with dumplings and red cabbage. We’re right on the verge of the season, so you really have to watch what you eat. But that one day when you have a little more than usual doesn’t matter if you get back to normal otherwise. I’ll pass on the chocolate Easter bunnies. The whole thing. With ears.”

Lennox Lehmann (SSP 300): “I’m not going to eat anything but chicken and rice, because I need to lose a few pounds before the season starts. I probably won’t be having a chocolate bunny either. I’m racing my first race of the year on April 20.”
