For three years, Bastian Ubl was a fixture in the IDM, spending one of those years in the Superstock 600 Cup and the other two in the Supersport class. Now he is moving to the Pro Superstock 1000 series, which is held as part of the IDM support program. It serves as a feeder series for the premier IDM Superbike class.
Bastian Ubl has hit the reset button. He’s wiped the slate clean. Behind him lies a season that was both instructive and painful. He made progress on the track, but he’s also never been so seriously injured. “That was my worst year, with a torn outer and inner ligament in my leg, a torn capsule and muscle in my left elbow, and a shattered carpal bone,” says the loyal Yamaha rider, listing the injuries he struggled with for a long time. “Before that, I hadn’t even broken a collarbone,” reveals last year’s 25th-place finisher in the Supersport class.
The five screws in his left hand and three more in his elbow will now serve as a lifelong reminder of that fateful crash in Most. They will not be removed but will fuse with the bone. Ubl was deeply shaken at the end of the season by the fatal Superbike accident involving his teammate Leon Langstädtler.
Now, the 21-year-old from Ingelheim am Rhein is starting fresh. He’ll be racing for BMW in the Pro Superstock 1000 series, the successor to the previous cup. With his own team, but
As always, he’ll be racing under the banner of Motorrad Center Altendiez (MCA). The partnership continues, even though Ubl will be sharing the pit with his Cup teammate Leon Franz in the future. “I can’t race the BMW with MCA anymore because everything is completely focused on Honda due to Julius Caesar Rörig’s CBR 600 RR campaign.” Ubl’s first test rides in Cartagena will begin on January 29, 2023. He’ll be on the road for a week.
