Everyone in the paddock knows Bastian Ubl. He’s the one who’s always smiling, wears his heart on his sleeve, and sometimes seems to almost forget to breathe because he’s bursting with energy. Right now, he has every reason to be happy: The 21-year-old Yamaha YZF-R6 rider from Team MCA Racing has racked up more than twice as many championship points in the first two IDM events this year as he did in all of last year.
At the end of the 2021 season, he had just two points. Now, the cheerful Rhinelander from Ingelheim has already racked up five points. And the IDM “ Supersport ” season has only just gotten underway. “It’s still my goal to race in the World Championship,” says Ubl ambitiously. “I live for that. The IDM isn’t just a hobby for me. You have to organize your life around it if you want to race with the very best.” Ubl hopes to add a few more points to his tally this year.
And actually, the City Triathlon in Frankfurt this August is also on the calendar. Ubl plans to tackle the Olympic distance—a 1.5-km swim, a 45-km bike ride, and a 10-km run. He says he’s in good shape, but Ubl is even considering postponing his participation for a year. That’s because the precision mechanic has to take his master’s certification exam for work.
