When the International German Motorcycle Championship (IDM) comes to the Schleizer Dreieck from July 23 to 25, 2021, top-tier racing will meet enthusiastic fans. For the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic a year and a half ago, authorities are allowing an event without capacity limits due to low infection rates. Spectators will also have free access to the paddock, and camping is permitted on the large grassy area. At Germany’s only natural race track, the clock is being turned back to the old days—with the hope that the future will look different and that COVID-19 will no longer stand a chance.
“We hope the news that everything will proceed just as it did at the last event in 2019 will spread quickly,” says IDM series manager Normann Broy of Motor Presse Stuttgart. “The open paddock and direct contact with the riders make the race weekend in Schleiz even more appealing. The IDM in particular is known for giving spectators the chance to get up close to the riders. Of course, we’d be delighted if fans took advantage of this opportunity, just as they have in the past.”
The IDM classes Superbike 1000, Supersport 600, Supersport 300, and Sidecar will take to the track at the Schleizer Dreieck. These will be complemented by cup series in which both up-and-coming riders and experienced competitors will battle for points. Local heroes Julian Puffe (Superbike 1000), Philipp Stich (Superstock 600), and Micky Winkler (Supersport 300) are likely to be in the spotlight. The three Schleiz natives are among the podium contenders in their respective categories on their “home turf.”
Markus Reiterberger is making a highly anticipated return. The three-time IDM Superbike 1000 champion will be competing in the premier class on his favorite track aboard a BMW and will contest all remaining 2021 championship races except for the one at Assen. The Bavarian is the lap record holder at the Schleizer Dreieck.
Here’s some more good news: Ticket prices remain the same. Admission on Saturday is €19.00, and on Sunday €25.00. A weekend ticket costs €35.00. All tickets include access to the paddock. Admission is free for children and teenagers up to and including age 17.
