Starting with the IDM event in Schleiz (July 23–25), Kevin Wahr will take over the Yamaha of the Dutch MVR Racing team for the remainder of the 2021 season. The team’s previous rider, Marc Buchner, cites health reasons for his withdrawal.
Kevin Wahr won both races in the IDM Supersport 600 class for MVR Racing during his guest appearance at the 2020 Hockenheim finale, but he didn’t have the time to compete in the full 2021 season. First, he became the father of a daughter. Second, his job at the family business is taking up more and more of his time. The company is a regional energy supplier, providing heating oil, pellets, and fuels, among other things.
However, he stayed in touch with team boss Mart van Roij, and Wahr couldn’t resist the offer—or the temptation—to compete in a few races after all. He says, “Four weekends—I can handle that.” The 32-year-old from Nagold admits, however: “It won’t be easy with the current competition, which has already warmed up. That’s why we’re training in Assen beforehand to make sure everything’s in order and just to get a few laps in.” Since last year’s IDM finale, Wahr hasn’t sat on a race bike. “The only thing I’ve ridden on two wheels is my e-bike with a bike trailer and my daughter in it.”
It’s well known that Wahr likes to keep a low profile. That was also the case with his double victory at Hockenheim. With his limited appearances, the 2013 champion is like a surprise egg. You never know what’s coming.
After a disastrous start to the season, Marc Buchner has pulled the plug on his partnership with MVR Racing. “I dislocated my shoulder during winter training in Ledenon. I’ve been having problems with it ever since, and I’ve also developed neck pain. The level of competition in the IDM Supersport 600 is extremely high, and I’m only operating at 70 percent of my capacity. Under these circumstances, it doesn’t make sense to just keep riding. It’s also unclear how long I’ll have to sit out. I just know that I got back on the bike too soon and too quickly.”
