They don’t do things by halves here. On a dry track, no one could touch Patrick Hobelsberger (Bonovo action by MGM) in either the first or second race of the IDM Supersport . Max Enderlein (M32 Racing) had briefly led the first race. “He passed me in the chicane, but after the Matador I braked my way back past him,” Hobelsberger explained. The Bavarian made sure to open up a gap, posted 1:36-minute lap times again, and set a new track record in his class. “Pax” wasn’t very entertained and remarked, “I would have liked to have had someone else there who really pushed me. I actually think 1:35 lap times are possible. But without pressure and competition, it’s hard to pull that off. If you don’t have to, you don’t push yourself that far.”
The next few hours will determine whether Hobelsberger receives a wild card for the Supersport at the Most circuit. The race will take place in early August as part of the Superbike World Championship.
Martin Vugrinec (ferQuest-UNIOR Racing) could finally breathe a sigh of relief. In the first race yesterday, Saturday, he had been knocked off his bike. He sustained injuries to his inner thigh. The 22-year-old Croatian was in severe pain. The motorcycle of Gabriel Noderer (Kawasaki Weber-Motos Racing), who had also crashed through no fault of his own, had struck him directly. Vugrinec fought tooth and nail and managed to finish second. Max Enderlein, coming off the disaster at the season opener in Oschersleben, made his return to the podium in third place.
Thomas Gradinger was disqualified. Fearing he might suffer the same fate as Superbike rider Grünwald—whose motorcycle was found to be too light at the end of the Superbike race—he had his YZF-R6 refueled on the starting grid as a precaution. A mistake: Refueling on the starting grid is strictly prohibited. As a former Supersport, he really should have known that, but under pressure, things often don’t go as planned.
Valentin Debise (Kawasaki Weber-Motos Racing) finished fourth and broke Yamaha’s dominance with his green Kawasaki. The Frenchman also managed to hold his own in the overall standings. He is tied for the lead with Hobelsberger.
The race was red-flagged after ten laps and was not restarted. Severin Bingisser (CH/Kawasaki Schnock Team Motorex) and Colin Velthuizen (NLD/Lentink Sports Racing) had crashed.
