IDM SBK 1000: Airbag saves Florian Alt after highside

Thanks to his airbag suit, Florian Alt escaped injury during his violent highside. Now it’s time to get back up, straighten his helmet, and keep riding. Text: Anke Wieczorek; Photo: Dino Eisele

Florian Alt’s only points haul at the IDM Superbike season opener last weekend in Oschersleben was three points. In the second race, the title favorite from the Wilbers BMW Racing Team crashed. Although the track was mostly dry, unlike in the morning, Alt’s fight for a podium finish came to an end on the sixth lap. He crashed out of the race with a violent highside on a still-wet patch. “It happened at the entrance to the chicane. I had already closed the throttle and was in the coasting phase. Then the rear wheel suddenly broke out. The weekend went pretty badly. I’m just glad that the airbag in my leather suit deployed when I crashed. The helmet also took a bit of a beating in the crash, but I’m okay.”

Teammate Marco Fetz took home five IDM points from Oschersleben. His take on the weekend: “The feeling of briefly leading the first race was absolutely amazing. I would have loved to have enjoyed it for longer than just one lap. In the end, the weather didn’t play along with our tire choice, so there was just nothing we could do.”

Team manager Wilbers comments: “That’s racing. Thanks to Florian Alt, we had pole position in the premier class and were feeling very confident, but in the end, only the race results count. Luck wasn’t on our side this time, but many others are in the same boat, and better days are ahead. However, after the performances of our two riders in Oschersleben, I’m very optimistic about the rest of the season. We’ve shown what we’re capable of and put ourselves right up front. So, after the meager results we ultimately had in the races, our motto is: Get back up, straighten your crown, and keep going.”
