IDM Supersport 600: Tom Toparis hat den Sprung in die WM geschafft

That happened fast. The 2019 IDM Supersport is now racing in the World Championship; according to team management, Tom Toparis is ready to go. There is also speculation about a guest start in the IDM. Text: Anke Wieczorek; Photo: Dino Eisele

Once again, a rider has used the IDM as a springboard to the World Championship. Tom Toparis, who raced for the Dutch Benro Racing Team on a Yamaha in the 2019 season, will compete in all European races of the Supersport in 2020.

The 19-year-old Australian was the defending champion in his home country last season, which is why he missed a few IDM races. But the long-haired golden boy secured a victory right at the first event. Although he wasn’t able to repeat that triumph, more podium finishes followed. The wild Australian was almost always a contender for the top spots. His team management was thrilled with his performance. At the end of the season, Topari finished fifth in the IDM overall standings.

The team's junior rider was actually supposed to compete for the IDM title in 2020 as preparation for his subsequent move to the Supersport. However, Benro Racing believes that Toparis is already ready. The first race will take place in late March in Jerez, Spain.

However, it probably won't be possible to do without IDM entirely. There is talk that Tom Toparis will compete in the Supersport at Oschersleben as part of German Speedweek.
