The second race began with a stoppage and a restart. On the first attempt, Peter Schröder/Denise Kartheininger (LCR F1 Suzuki) and Tim Reeves/Mark Wilkes (Adolf RS Yamaha) collided right in the first corner. The British rider lost his fender in the process. Wout Vermeule and Jarno Bouius (RSR F1) were the next to veer off the ideal line. Jakob Rutz and Björn Bosch (LCR F1 Yamaha) had to swerve onto the grass to avoid the collision, which brought both of them to a complete stop. The red flag was then waved to halt the race.
The pole-sitters, John Smits and Gunter Verbrugge (RCN F1 Yamaha), managed to hold the lead for one lap after the restart, but then Reeves’ “Berlin Express” was unstoppable as it surged ahead. The seven-time world champion’s sponsor is a German bus company, which is where the team name comes from.
There were still quite a few position changes in the remaining laps. Reeves won the 600cc sidecar class ahead of Bennie Streuer/Kevin Rousseau (LCR F1 Kawasaki) and Markus Schlosser/Marcel Fries (LCR F1 Yamaha). Streuer, who is usually so reserved, was in high spirits and said, “Things went much better today than yesterday.” On Saturday, he had finished third, 14 seconds behind Schlosser.
In the 1000 ccm class, Mike Roscher and his passenger Anna Burkard (LCR F1 BMW) won the race ahead of Smits and Andres Nussbaum/Manuel Hirschi (LCR F1 Suzuki). The Hirschi’s Sense team continues to lead the overall standings. Smits, however, is in second place in the standings, just two points behind.
