No one could hold a candle to guest driver Koen Meuffels, who also competes in the World Championship, during qualifying. The Dutchman was more than half a second faster than the rest of the field, which was locked in a fierce battle for the top 15 spots. There is only a hair’s breadth of difference between the individual drivers.
Somewhat surprisingly, defending champion Toni Erhard on the Freudenberg-KTM is only in sixth place on the grid. What’s notable is that, apart from guest rider Meuffels—who is racing outside the official standings and thus receives no points—no other KTM is positioned among the front-runners. Rick Dunnink is in second place on a Yamaha, followed by Micky Winkler on a Kawasaki. The green motorcycles have become much more common in the junior class anyway.
Where are the Yamaha women? Julia Hämmer finished 18th in practice, and Nina Schubrikoff came in 20th. They weren't the last ones.
