The second IDM Sidecar race at Assen also turned into a triumphant victory for Josef Sattler and Uwe Neubert (Adolf RS1 F1 BMW). With their double victory this weekend , the Bavarian-Saxon duo now holds a 20-point lead over defending champions Bennie Streuer and Gerard Daalhuizen (LCR F1 Suzuki), who were absent this time because they were competing in the Sidecar World Championship in Rijeka, which was taking place at the same time.
Just as in the first race, the AKW team with André Kretzer and Björn Bosch (LCR F1 Suzuki) was in the lead at first, with Sattler right behind them. Suddenly, Mike Roscher and Anna Burkard (LCR F1 BMW) burst through the pack . It took Sattler two laps to reclaim his original position. Then the chase for Kretzer continued. He, in turn, was held up by two lapped riders. Sattler was already right on his tail at that point. Kretzer: “I wanted to pass the slower riders on the outside. But I didn’t come out of the corner well. Josef passed me on the inside, and then there was nothing I could do.” Thus, the top two spots on the podium were decided.
Roscher was still beaten by the French guest team of Manuel Moreau and Sébastien Arifon (H.P Parts F1 Suzuki), though they did not receive any points. As a result, Roscher was classified third, even though he did not stand on the podium.
John Smits/Gunter Verbrugge (RCN F1 Yamaha), who had finished third in the first race, were forced to retire early because the steering was jerking, rendering the sidecar unrideable. The race also ended after eight of twelve laps for Manuel Hirschi/Andreas Nussbaum (LCR F1 Suzuki) from Switzerland due to gearbox problems.
