The women in the top class were in danger of missing the next IDM round in Oschersleben due to injuries. The all-clear has been given: Both Sarah Heide and Lucy Glöckner have confirmed they will compete in the IDM as part of German Speedweek from June 7–10, 2018. At the last event, Heide’s knee was still giving her trouble. The Saxon rider from Team Suzuki Laux ADAC Sachsen had torn her meniscus and cruciate ligament in a bicycle crash in Assen last year. Despite physical therapy, her knee could not withstand the strain of motorcycle riding at the start of the season. The Suzuki rider explains:
“We found the problem and have now adjusted the training plan. The exercises from physical therapy hadn’t really helped much in terms of reducing the strain on my knee when I was in the riding position. You don’t really notice that until you’re back on the bike.”
After her bicycle accident, Heide had a tendon removed from her thigh and implanted directly into her knee. “This means I have to completely relearn how to use and put weight on my knee. That’s exactly what I need to work on. Because without strength, I can’t move mountains.”
The Zwickau native, who turned 30 in early May, is now pain-free when it comes to racing, “and things are getting better every day.” She has since been testing the Suzuki GSX-R 1000 at the Lausitzring. The bike’s electronics have been fine-tuned. She now has the green light for her favorite track, Oschersleben.
Lucy Glöckner of the Kawasaki Schnock Team Motorex isn’t letting her crash—in which she injured her arm at the Endurance World Championship in Slovakia—throw her off course. Her participation is a certainty. Further examinations in Germany revealed that the ligaments around her collarbone are torn, but the 27-year-old is already familiar with this. After a short rest, Glöckner should be able to resume training and compete in the IDM at Oschersleben.
