SSP: Blin's one-two finish dashes Geiger's hopes

Daniel Blin, Dirk Geiger, Lennox Lehmann. One Ducati and two Yamahas. It was the same podium finish as yesterday, but before that happened, the old saying proved true once again in today’s second EURO MOTO Supersport race: “Nothing is decided until the checkered flag has fallen.”

Luca de Vleeschauwer (Team SWPN), who had finished fourth in the first Sachsenring race, completely botched the start and found himself trailing the field. At the front, there was a Yamaha one-two with Dirk Geiger and Lehmann (both Team Apreco). Opening-round winner Daniel Blin (Automarket AF Racing Team) didn’t sit back for long on his Ducati Panigale V2; he applied pressure and pushed Lehmann back one spot.

Geiger, on the other hand, seemed determined to pull away for good, but everything changed on the penultimate lap. The R9 rider lost a second and a half after hitting a bump. Something wasn’t right. Geiger’s previously flawless performance turned into a nightmare. Geiger slid, slid, and slid. The tire on the Yamaha was done for. Blin was in the right place at the right time, overtook the German, and secured the maximum possible points for the weekend. The Polish rider, now the championship leader, also claimed the second race win of the day for Ducati. Just a few hours earlier, Lukas Tulovic had won in the Superbike class on the Ducati Panigale V4R.

“Actually, I was trying to conserve the tires. I knew things could get critical toward the end of the race,” Geiger said, shrugging his shoulders at the finish line, “but then the drop came out of nowhere. Now I’m taking home two second-place finishes. Next time, it’s all about attacking!”

What else happened: Luca de Vleeschauwer managed to work his way up to sixth place. He couldn’t afford to dwell on what might have been if the start had gone well. Lorenzo Fellon won the internal Kawasaki duel against Freddie Heinrich.
