IDM SSP: Kofler on Pole, Geiger Loses Points!

Defending champion Andreas Kofler (Yamalube Motorsport Kofler) will start from pole position in both IDM Supersport races. Far more significant, however, is the fact that championship leader Dirk Geiger (MCA Racing) will have to start from the back of the grid and has had his points from the first race in Most retroactively revoked.

Andy Kofler actually improved on his lap time from earlier that morning during the second qualifying session. The Austrian reported that his condition had improved following the serious crash he had suffered at the Schleizer Dreieck. “My shoulder is already feeling a bit better than it did recently at Most. The osteomyelitis is just taking a while to clear up.”

Dirk Geiger should have been in a celebratory mood the day after his 23rd birthday, but instead, the Honda rider is facing serious consequences. IDM technicians discovered that the engine seal was broken. According to the regulations, this means that all races in which the engine was used will be disqualified. In Geiger’s case, this was the first race at the event in Most, Czech Republic. Geiger will therefore have 25 points deducted. The fact that he has to start from the very back of the grid in Oschersleben is due to a different reason. This is because using a fourth engine now exceeds the limit of three engines.

Teammate Julius Caesar Rörig has been disqualified from all previous races because he is still using his first engine. The team has filed an appeal against the decision.

Following this incident, Andy Kofler heads into this afternoon’s race at 3:30 p.m. as the new championship leader. Kofler has overtaken Geiger by one point.
