At the end of the year, Robert Werth was honored with the Bert Poensgen Cup in the International German Motorcycle Championship (IDM)—not as a rider, but for his work behind the scenes. The native of Hesse pulls the strings in the sidecar scene and kept it alive with great passion when it was in danger of disappearing. The 69-year-old has placed his trophy in his living room at home in Birstein.

Robert Werth received the latest Bert Poensgen Cup for his many years of service to the IDM Sidecar series. He was thrilled about it, but he doesn’t particularly like the hype surrounding him, which is why he immediately emphasizes: “It’s very important to me to say that the fantastic board from two years ago—Marcel Fries, Marcus Gerzack, Christian Ruppert, Markus Schwegler, and Klaus Knobloch—played a key role in these successes. The team spirit was unique, and we could understand and trust each other implicitly.”

Robert Werth, in particular, was instrumental in ensuring that a sidecar race was held at the Schleizer Dreieck in the 2024 season. Due to low turnout the previous year, the event had been hanging in the balance and was in danger of being omitted from the racing calendar in this motorsports stronghold. Unthinkable for Werth. As the first chairman of the Sidecar Riders’ Association (IGG), he made countless phone calls and even dug into his own pocket to get a guest race off the ground. In the end, in addition to the teams competing in the IDM standings, the lineup included five-time world champion Pekka Päivärinta/Adam Christie, the current title holders Todd Ellis/Emmanuelle Clement, and, among others, the current World Championship leaders Markus Schlosser/Luca Schmidt.

Robert Werth doesn't just talk—he takes action. Currently, as team manager, he supports Markus Venus, the two-time European grass track champion and eight-time German champion in the 500cc sidecar class. That’s not going to change. Just like the IGG tent in the paddock, where every rider has a place to go and can ask questions. Robert Werth says, “We help everyone out as best we can.”
