For the first time in the International German Motorcycle Championship (IDM), the Bert Poensgen Cup was awarded at the Sachsenring. It went to Dirk Geiger (MCA Racing).

The challenge cup was established in memory of Bert Poensgen, who shaped the motorcycle scene like no other. During his nearly 30-year career as marketing and sales director, he led Suzuki to the top of the registration statistics several times. Poensgen was a passionate motorsports enthusiast and leveraged his commitment on the racetrack to drive the brand’s success. He passed away in 2017 at the age of 69 from a heart attack.

The Bert Poensgen Cup was established by his close associates. It comes with a cash and non-cash prize and is awarded by rotating sponsors—with Shark being the first—at every IDM event to a rider who has demonstrated exceptional performance in the Superbike, Supersport, or Supersport 300 classes.

At the season opener at the Sachsenring, an independent jury selected Dirk Geiger from the IDM Supersport class. The reasons for the selection were: numerous overtaking maneuvers during the race, finishing in second place as a rookie, and securing Honda’s first podium finish in the class.
