IDM SBK: Florian Alt Heads to WSBK with a Brand-New Honda

For a long time, Florian Alt was chasing the championship title, but he finally secured the win on a Honda. On top of that, he’s set to make his debut in the Superbike World Championship. Text: Anke Wieczorek; Photo: Björn Gramm

The prize money from winning the IDM Superbike championship and the allocation of Pirelli tires that came with the victory have already been put to use. Florian Alt will compete in the Superbike World Championship finale in Jerez at the end of October on a wildcard entry. For this event, team manager Jens Holzhauer has built a brand-new Honda CBR 1000 RR-R in his racing department.

Just as it does every year at the end of the season, IDM tire supplier Pirelli is once again digging deep into its pockets to provide the new Superbike champion with tires for his wildcard appearance, along with all the fees associated with competing in the World Championship. For Florian Alt, this will be his first. The days are numbered. The Superbike World Championship finale will take place from October 27 to 29, 2023, in Jerez, Spain.

Honda team manager Jens Holzhauer has been on cloud nine ever since 27-year-old Florian Alt won the title. Their last triumph was 13 years ago. The motorcycle dealer from Wittenberge is now taking their World Championship campaign to the next level. He’s coming out with a completely rebuilt bike for his rider. One that’s closer to the World Championship bikes than any IDM motorcycle has ever been. That means: a new telescopic fork, different brakes, a larger fuel tank. On top of that are a few items mandated by DORNA. These include, for example, tire pressure monitoring, the timing system, the transponder, and RPM monitoring.

Holzhauer recently scheduled two test days in Oschersleben for the WorldSBK project. He intends to make the most of this opportunity to shine in Jerez. “Planning is everything,” he says of this hectic period, during which things have been moving at a rapid pace.
“The races in Jerez are a bonus following the end of the IDM season. Of course, the highlight would be if Flo scores a point.” The team truck is heading to Spain tomorrow, Sunday.
