New year, new rules. Technological progress and the alignment of technology with international standards are among the key factors behind the success of the International German Motorcycle Championship (IDM). While there will be no major changes in the IDM Supersport 300 and Sidecar classes in 2023, new regulations will come into effect in the IDM Superbike and IDM Supersport Next Generation classes. The detailed regulations will be published early next year, but the organizing team of Germany’s premier motorcycle series is already offering a first look at the most important changes.
Starting in 2023, the FIM World Supersport technical regulations will be implemented in the IDM, with minor national variations. The “Next Generation” category allows the use of motorcycles that do not fit into the traditional 600cc class, such as the MV Agusta F3 800 or the Triumph Street Triple 765 RS. A sophisticated balancing rule ensures that the various designs are harmonized. For this reason, the standard electronics used in the World Championship will also be installed in the IDM. “We are in close contact with the technical director of the Superbike World Championship to incorporate all of the FIM’s experience from 2022 into the technical regulations for 2023,” says series manager Normann Broy, who is well aware of the responsibility.
There will be no separate classification for the “older” generation of IDM Supersport models. They will be integrated into the series as usual and remain eligible to compete and earn points. The 2022 IDM Supersport regulations apply to these motorcycles.
IDM Superbike:
Minor changes are to be made to the existing technical regulations. The price cap for kit electronics will be adjusted to reflect current conditions. It is expected that triple clamps will be approved for all participants as part of the manufacturer partnerships, with a price cap in place. In addition, approval of a small offset range is being considered.
General:
Next year, a service partner will be on site at all IDM races to provide support for airbag systems. The partner will offer service for all airbag systems and brands. Due to the ongoing supply shortages, airbag vests will also be permitted for use until further notice. The trigger mechanism may continue to be electronic or manual.
