He earns his living riding the single-cylinder TM 450. He gets his extra thrill from riding the four-cylinder BMW S 1000 RR. Supermoto World Champion Marc Reiner Schmidt is diving back into the IDM Superbike adventure in 2022.
He just can’t help himself, and competition rules his life. Marc-Reiner Schmidt thoroughly enjoyed his first appearance in the premier class nearly a year ago. But that wasn’t enough for him. The IDM races in Most, Czech Republic, a week and a half ago fell right in the gap between his starts in the Supermoto World Championship and the Italian Championship. “Let’s go for it,” thought the 26-year-old, and signed up as a guest rider and teammate to Marc Neumann on the starting list. Riding a motorcycle provided by training organizer Tommy Wagner.
Schmidt’s goal was a top-ten finish in the races. “It might work in the wet, but I lack experience in the dry,” the drift artist said, assessing his chances. The Friedrichshafen native managed to secure a top-ten finish in the second Superbike race, of all things, in sweltering heat. He has set his sights on the upcoming event from July 22 to 24 as his next IDM date.
Is there more to come? “No, there will still be exceptions. I make my money in the Supermoto World Championship, and that’s where I’m staying.” Marc-Reiner Schmidt’s 2021 world championship title was Germany’s third such victory, following Bernd Hiemer’s wins in 2006 and 2008.
