But where was title favorite Thomas Gradinger (Eder Racing), who felt much stronger at Oschersleben than he did at the season opener at the Lausitzring? The Austrian crashed as early as the formation lap. Things couldn’t have gone worse for the former World Championship rider. He watched as Max Enderlein cruised to his third win of the season, and Kofler never managed to mount an attack on the leader. Unlike usual, there were no breakaways at the front, but rather a combative group of eight consisting of Enderlein, Kofler, Melvin van der Voort, Luca de Vleeschauwer, Milan Merckelbagh, Jan-Ole-Jähnig, Chris Beinlich, and Twan Smits.
It was a back-and-forth battle; at one point, Kofler put pressure on Enderlein, but de Vleeschauwer’s bike broke down in the final stages, and four riders crashed: the race was red-flagged. According to the rules, the race results are determined by the order in which the riders completed the last full lap before the stoppage. So Enderlein, Kofler, and Beinlich stood on the podium. For Kofler, the race being called off after 12 laps was a real shame, as he would have loved nothing more than to go head-to-head with Enderlein. His spot on the front row gave the Austrian a real boost. But he’ll get another chance today in the second race of the day.
