IDM SBK: Leistung und mehr Sicherheit im Reglement fixiert

The race calendar for the International German Motorcycle Championship (IDM) has been finalized. The technical regulations for the solo classes will follow. The exact wording for the individual sections is still being finalized. In the IDM Superbike class, the expected changes are significant and affect the front fork, rear shock linkage, certain engine components, and the electronics.

Starting in the 2022 season, teams in the IDM premier class will be allowed to use forks from IDM series partners as an alternative to the original forks. However, there is a cap on the purchase price. A ready-to-use fork, including all necessary adapters, may cost a maximum of 5,000 euros net and must be available for all motorcycle models used (on a permanent basis) in the IDM Superbike class.

Similarly, fork bridges from IDM series partners will be permitted, provided that their retail price does not exceed 1,500 euros (net) and they can be installed with the motorcycle’s respective series offset. This saves some of the testing work. Since the price caps are set at the level of the series price, only alternatives to the original fork will be permitted.

As for the chassis, the long-standing debate over the swingarm on the Yamaha RN65 has been settled. On the model known as the YZF-R1, a specific section of the wheel axle slot—previously marked by the manufacturer for racing use—may be opened. Extending the wheelbase results in greater stability.

For all models in the IDM Superbike class, the rear suspension setup—including its tie rods and bearings—may be chosen freely. Either kit parts from the respective manufacturer must be used, or, alternatively, proof of the manufacturer’s approval along with technical drawings must be submitted to the IDM Technical Commission.

In the engines of IDM Superbikes, intake manifolds may be selected at the team’s discretion. Kit camshafts from the respective motorcycle manufacturer are also permitted, including the corresponding valve springs, rockers, and shims. As things stand, reprogramming (“flashing”) the stock ECU (Engine Control Unit) is not permitted. This engine control unit regulates, controls, and monitors important functions ranging from throttle control and engine braking to the injection and ignition maps. A flash—that is, the direct programming of the control unit—allows for changes to the stock settings.
From now on, however, only the kit electronics from the respective manufacturer will be permitted.
