Last year, Colin Velthuizen finished third overall in the IDM Supersport 300. Now, as a rookie, he is on the verge of establishing himself among the front-runners in the highly competitive Supersport 600 class.
At just 17 years old, this newcomer to the IDM Supersport 600 class has done everything right: Colin Velthuizen finished eighth and ninth in the two races at Oschersleben, making him the third-best Dutch rider and sixth in the overall standings.
It had started to rain lightly just before the first race. He had to weather a couple of scary moments in the opening laps, but then everything went according to plan for the Dutch rider—most importantly, he stayed on the bike even as it poured down in buckets. “We definitely can’t complain about two top-ten finishes on my first race weekend on the Yamaha R6,” laughs the junior rider from the Lentink Sports Racing Team. Velthuizen won’t be sitting idle until the next IDM round from June 11–13 in Most, Czech Republic. Before that, he’ll be competing in the first round of the Dutch Championship in Assen on June 5.
Teammate Jeroen Hilster crashed in a highside when heavy rain set in during the first race. The result: a broken right wrist.
