The past few weeks have been pure stress for IDM Superbike 1000 champion Jonas Folger, but the result is a relief for his body, mind, the team, and the fans. It’s official: Bonovo Action will compete in the Superbike World Championship next season with Jonas Folger and the BMW M 1000 RR. The hoped-for partnership with BMW Motorrad Motorsport has become a reality. German motorcycle manufacturer BMW is expanding its involvement in the FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK).

Jonas Folger won every Superbike race in the 2020 IDM season. The Bavarian former MotoGP rider wanted to use Germany’s premier road racing series to make a comeback after a break due to illness and to make the leap to the FIM Superbike World Championship. His return to the racetrack with Team Bonovo Action by MGM Racing was a triumphant one. The 2020 IDM season proved to be a milestone in Folger’s career.

To make the leap to the Superbike World Championship, the 27-year-old is now trading in his Yamaha R1 for the new BMW M1000RR. Team Bonovo Action will compete as a satellite team alongside the BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team (riders Tom Sykes and Michael van der Mark). The team is owned by Jürgen Röder, and Michael Galinski serves as team manager.

“Collaborating with satellite teams is an important next step in our involvement in the FIM Superbike World Championship,” says Markus Schramm, Head of BMW Motorrad. “With the Bonovo Action Team and Jonas Folger, this marks the first time a German team with a Bavarian rider on a Bavarian motorcycle will compete as a full-fledged team in WorldSBK.” Bonovo Action is expected to work closely with the BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team.
