Marco Fetz rode the Wilbers-BMW during the Bonovo Sidecar Festival a week ago in Oschersleben. Riding a Suzuki, the 20-year-old Bavarian from Kleinbreitenbronn is currently in 18th place in the overall IDM Superbike 1000 standings in his rookie year of 2020. Is he switching teams now?

The relationship between Marco Fetz and Wilbers has been going on for quite some time. When he won the Cup title in the Superstock 600 class in 2018, Fetz had already installed Wilbers components in his Yamaha. At the time, Benny Wilbers had promised him a test ride on an S1000 RR following his success. Now the time had finally come. Oschersleben welcomed the team with late-summer temperatures and a decent breeze. Also on site: Florian Alt, the current 2020 rider for Wilbers-BMW.

What was the result? Consistently improving lap times, a fifth-place finish in the invitational race, and a statement from team boss Benny Wilbers: “Marco is a talented racer whom we would now like to welcome into the BMW family. Together with BMW, we’re planning a 2021 IDM Superbike 1000 season with riders Alt and Fetz.”
Fetz is thrilled, but a contract hasn’t been signed yet. Wilbers says: “BMW is supporting us more than in the past, which also has a positive effect on the Fetz family’s financial contribution.”

Marco Fetz’s racing career began in 2011 in the ADAC Mini Bike Cup. His greatest achievements to date are a third-place finish in the 2017 Yamaha R6 Dunlop Cup and winning the 2018 DMSB Superstock 600 Cup. As a rookie in the IDM Superbike 1000, he secured a top-ten finish at Hockenheim in 2020.
