IDM Superbike 1000: Turmoil at Suzuki Alber-Bischoff; Marco Nekvasil Takes the Wheel

That was quick. One phone call was all it took, and Evrén Bischoff reached an agreement with Marco Nekvasil. The Austrian flew into the Netherlands last night. Text and photo: Anke Wieczorek

The search for a rider for the IDM Superbike 1000 round in Assen turned into an odyssey for Suzuki Alber-Bischoff . First, the deal with British rider Jordan Weaving fell through. Italian Alessandro Andreozzi was signed as a replacement. Team boss Evrén Bischoff had hoped the Superbike World Championship rider would be a lucky find for the GSX-R 1000. But the 27-year-old pulled out at the last minute yesterday. Reason: He had apparently agreed to everything too hastily; one of his sponsors did not approve of the plan. Andreozzi, however, did not announce his withdrawal until the Suzuki truck was already on its way to Assen.

Bischoff found himself in a bind from one minute to the next. Just as quickly, a solution presented itself. Marco Nekvasil stepped in—and, of all people, it was a driver from a rival team. The 21-year-old Austrian is usually registered in the World Endurance Championship with Denis Hertrampf, who runs the HPC-Power Team with Dominic Schmitter in the IDM. Nekvasil flew from Vienna to Amsterdam last night, where team boss Evrén Bischoff picked him up late at night.
